With advancements in dental technology, the embarrassment of unsightly and unhealthy silver/mercury fillings or metal margins and blue gums from old crowns is a thing of the past. These silver fillings, also known as mercury fillings, were effective but very visible and tended to darken over time. We are now able to replace dark, leaking fillings and old, ugly crowns with space-age, state-of-the-art, tooth-colored resin or porcelain adhesive restorations. Besides looking and feeling completely natural these restorations are stronger and healthier for you than the old technology.
A tooth filling is a type of restorative dentistry treatment used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay or otherwise damaged surfaces of the teeth. The fillings replace enamel that has been lost in your tooth and strengthen them beyond the level they were before.
How Does the Procedure Work?
In order to restore the damaged area of your tooth, Dr. Maroon must first begin by prepping the tooth and necessary surrounding areas. The damaged or decayed area is removed and then cleansed to remove bacteria or debris before the restoration is completed. Dr. Maroon will only remove enough of your damaged or decayed tooth material so that the filling material can be placed properly. Once all the damage and decay is removed, your tooth will be shaped to prepare it for the filling. Finally, after the filling has been placed, Dr. Maroon will use what are called burs to finish and polish the tooth giving it a natural appearance that is stronger and healthier than before.
Dental Fillings Aftercare
Once your filling has been accomplished, there are some important steps you can take to prevent decay from forming under and around the filling, or in other teeth. Dr. Maroon will discuss these steps with you in detail but in case you forget or need a quick reference will we list them here for your convenience.
We suggest that you brush at least twice a day with good fluoride toothpaste. Flossing at least once a day is also advised. A fluoride mouth wash and a balanced diet that limits your intake of sugary foods and drinks are recommended as to not encourage further enamel loss. Routine check-ups and teeth-cleanings with Advanced Dental will ensure you are maintaining a healthy smile so we recommend doing this every six months or as advised by our office.
